Pat Summitt  coached The Tennessee Lady Vols were  by  for over four decades. Under Summitt, the Lady Vols won numerous SEC titles, appeared in 18 NCAA Final Fours and 4 AIAW Final Fours, and won 8 NCAA titles including an undefeated season. Additionally, Tennessee is the only team to have appeared in all 36 NCAA Tournaments, including 34 Sweet 16s (23 of which were consecutive).Summitt’s teams were known for participating in a grueling regular season schedule, often toughest in the nation, in order to prepare the team for the NCAA tournament.

Tennessee has  built up rivalries with many prominent teams, including Texas, Stanford, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, and, most notably, Connecticut Huskies who are the current dominant team in  women’s college basketball . Like other Tennessee teams, the Lady Vols compete in the SEC, which has historically been the most dominant conference in the sport. Summitt led Tennessee to 1098 victories, with an incredible 84.2% win rate. The numbers at home are staggering , as Tennessee has won 91% of home games and 93.1% of in-conference home games.

Freshman Year

At the beginning of the the 2005-06 season Parker started for the Tennessee Lady Vols . On March 19, 2006, in an NCAA tournament first-round game against Army, was  the first woman to dunk twice  in an NCAA tournament game. She was the SEC Rookie of the Year (Coaches and AP) and helped the Lady Vols win the 2006 SEC Women’s Basketball Championship.  Parker hit the game-winning shot with 17 seconds remaining in the SEC tournament championship game against LSU. She was named tournament MVP and was named to the 2006 Kodak All-America team, making her one of the few to ever receive the award as a freshman. In the NCAA tournament regional finals against North Carolina, Parker got into early foul trouble and  Tennessee ultimately lost the game.

For the Brazil 2006 FIBA World Championship for Women  Parker was the only college player named to the USA squad. The USA squad finished in third place.

Sophomore Year

January 28, 2007,  against Alabama, Parker scored  1,000th career point as a sophomore, making her the fastest player in Lady Vol history to do so. At the SEC tournament in Duluth, Georgia, Parker was named the 2007 SEC Player of the Year.  Parker  led the Lady Vols to their first National Championship victory since 1998 on April 03, finishing  the game with 17 points beating Rutgers  University while earning the tournament’s MVP honor.

Candace Parker Releases Third, Basketball Exclusive Adidas Shoe

Los Angeles Sparks’ star and WNBA veteran Candace Parker released the new Adidas Pro Bounce 18 Player Exclusive shoes .

The shoe is off-white in color, with University of Tennessee orange accents, in homage to the late Pat Summitt, who Parker still looks to as a role model. Parker can be seen oftentimes wearing orange shoes during the WNBA season, in remembrance of her former coach. Parker even attributed her 2016 WNBA Championship to her beloved coach. Also crediting Summitt with instilling in her many important life lessons, it is only fitting that Parker’s player-exclusive shoe would incorporate that University of Tennessee’s nostalgic flair.

Left, right, breathe. -Pat Summitt

Left, right, breathe is Parker’s most cherished motto, passed down by Summitt, and tattooed on her wrist. And the Pro Bounce pays tribute to the impact Summitt had on Parker, on and off the court. “I think of her impact, what she believed, what she instilled in me,” Parker said, of Summitt’s wisdom. “You can’t get too high with winning or too low with losing.”

Finally Adidas Releases Another CP3 Colorway

All of the accomplishments that Pat Summitt had at Tennessee, the school  was also an Adidas sponsored program .When Coach Pat died Adidas didn’t do anything to celebrate her legacy. When Candace Parker won the WNBA Championship this year, Adidas didn’t capitalize on her being a Summitt player and a champion at all.

There was very little coverage on the Adidas News website.Obviously for Adidas it was important, just not important enough to have taken place when Candace was at the height of her career and at one of the lowest moments.

Without  taking  advantage of the death of Coach Summitt, but when a legend transitions and a player has to overcome the pain that memories create while she has to try and win a WNBA championship… those are the moments where stories HAVE to be told and we all appreciate brands who cement the legacies of legends even if it might appear opportunistic.

This CP3 PE event took place after the WNBA season. It took place during opening week of the NBA.

Adidas needs to fix it’s basketball division .

  1. The high school season starts this month and Adidas launched a PE for the dopest player in the W, but they did it inside of a store and this is where the lack of understanding of basketball has been highlighted in the worst way possible.
  2. Candace just completed a WNBA season that saw her break a WNBA record for a statline. Adidas didn’t cover it.
  3. The WNBA season is over and Adidas signed three new faces to the  Adidas Hoops portfolio, but they did nothing to really help promote that.

The people who are running the division should have  considered the power of a campaign that extends the reach of the brand but how it effects young women everywhere who are trying to aspire to be the next Candace Parker or Diana Taurasi . This should have been thought out in detail. Every year high school teams across the country struggle to outfit their teams.. Every year  (coaches) shop like couponing parents for the best deal. What a good Adidas Basketball group would have done instead :

  1. The event would have been moved and held on the first official day of practice for high school teams.
  2. The event would have been held at a gym.
  3. The event would have been a coach and players’ clinic.
  4. At the event Adidas reps would have been available and team packages would have been available at 50% off. Basically wholesale direct to the coach and athletes. I know this could have been done inside of the store, but at a gym the gear could be tested by athletes.
  5. The event would have featured all Adidas signed WNBA players to enhance branding. All coaches would have received an Adidas motivational package for their offices and locker rooms, with stickers.
  6. The branding for the 2018-19 season would have been a throwback to ‘brotherhood’ and stated, “Basketball is a Sisterhood” with five Adidas players looking over their shoulders on the posters.
  7. Coaches would have been given packages to order Adidas branded tee-shirts created for their schools as a fund raiser.
  8. All players would be given Adidas basketball camp tees.
  9. An on-court instruction would have been organized for the seniors in the program establishing an event for the future as the seniors would have been instructed by WNBA players.
  10. Segments would have been live streamed and on the Adidas site where the Candace Parker shoe is being offered Team Bank Colors in every color associated with Parker’s high school to professional teams would be featured (That covers almost ever color). Also on the site would be team sale options for footwear with a coach’s log-in for discounted team pricing.

Candace deserved better than  this. The game of women’s basketball deserves better than this .Nike is dominating because it can relate to  its core market consumers .The industry it self needs Adidas Basketball to be better in creating  real competition for the swoosh . Every brands including Puma and Under Armour as well need to be better to promote the game of women’s basketball as a whole so the game may prosper and grow .

Pro Bounce 18 Shoes Available Now

This Pro Bounce pays tribute to the impact Summit had on Parker on and off the court.

Shoes Specs: They’re built with flexible cushioning and feature a premium mesh upper for lightweight stability in the paint. A marbled outsole is finished with graphic Parker details. Candace also has the motto“Left, right, breathe”   tattooed on her wrist. This marks Candace’s third PE with Adidas now available @ eBay   for $118.00 while they last

Female Sports Models -Honoring NBA’s Female Referees

The First  Two Women Referees In  NBA History

In 1997 Violet  Palmer and Dee Kantner  broke the NBA’s  officiating gender barrier . Palmer was the first woman to officiate an NBA playoff game in the April 25, 2006 match between the  New Jersey Nets and Indiana Pacers. Kantner debuted her NBA officiating career with a game between the Dallas Mavericks and the then Vancouver Grizzlies, who now are  the Memphis Grizzlies. She went on to officiate 54 games that season. Palmer(born July 20, 1964) is  retired she officiated in both the WNBA  and  NBA and the first female official to reach the highest competitive tier in any major U.S. professional sports league. She also earned recognition as a member of two NCAADivision II women’s championship basketball teams.

Concluding  19 years as a referee and battling with an annoying but very painful  knee injury. In 2016 Palmer made her retirement announcement.Being away from the  NBA officiating grind has allowed her to be present to revel in all of her accolades.

“Those years that I was in the NBA, it was like nonstop, a constant drive, traveling, living out of your suitcase all over the country,” described Palmer. “The scrutiny, it’s stressful and now I’m like, I can let my hair down.”

Now 53-years-old,Palmer, is the coordinator of Women’s Basketball Officials for the Pac 12 Conference, the West Coast Conference (WCC) and the Western Athletic Conference.

Hired in 1997, Violet Palmer went on to officiate in the NBA for 18 seasons.

Stay Committed To The Work And Put The Work First And Trust The System

Lauren Holtkamp, 33, is now a Full Time staff official in  the NBA, becoming the third woman to ref NBA games full-time, joining Dee Kantner (now the WNBA’s supervisor of officials) and  the now retired Violet Palmer (The First Female NBA referee).

“Part of the satisfaction of earning this opportunity has to do with the fact that I’ve been able to stay committed to the work and put the work first and trust the system and that’s what matters,” Says Holtkamp “It doesn’t matter who is doing the work as long as the work is high quality. There is a great deal of satisfaction in that.”

Holtkamp is just one of three officials who made  the leap  from the NBA Development League to the top echelon during  the 2014 season. The other two refs who were males Dedric Taylor and Justin Van Duyne also joined Holtkamp on the 63-person roster that year .

She said she appreciates what Kantner and Palmer have accomplished. “There is a kinship and certainly a sense of support and collegiality.”

But Holtkamp is emphatic that she is a referee   first and foremost who just happens to be a female .

“I would say really from day one when I got hired into the D-League I’ve been treated as a referee as far as my performance,” she said. “It’s been about my performance and the quality of work.”

Pair of Women Among Five New Full-Time NBA Referees Hires

Ashley Moyer-Gleich  and Natalie Sago were the two female officials promoted to full-time .They are the fourth and fifth full-time female NBA officials in the league’s history, preceded by former officials Violent Palmer and Dee Kantner, and Lauren Holtkamp, who is currently officiating in the league on a full-time basis.

FILE PHOTO: Oct 24, 2018; Miami, FL, USA; NBA referee Ashley Moyer-Gleich(75) during the first half between the Miami Heat and the New York

The new officials, all of whom have been working in the G League, are Ashley Moyer-Gleich, Natalie Sago, Mousa Dagher, Matt Myers and Phenizee Ransom.

The NBA released a statement  on the recently promoted five referees to full-time status, including the fourth and fifth women in league history to achieve full-time status.

“These officials have excelled in the specific performance areas that warranted working NBA games on a regular basis,” NBA vice president and head of referee development and training Monty McCutchen said in a release. “All five referees have achieved the pinnacle of their profession and will continue to work on their craft as they join the NBA officiating staff.”

All five officials will continue to also work in the G League, as, per the release, “all NBA referees with fewer than four years of service in the NBA work NBA G League games to gain additional experience as crew chiefs and develop as leaders.”

Both Moyer-Gleich, from Camp Hill, Pa., has also officiated in the WNBA and Sago, from Farmington, Mo., has  officiated in the WNBA for three seasons .Both women  officiated their  first regular-season NBA game on Oct. 22 2018.

WNBA  And  NBA   Referee Pay Scales

Image result for nba female referee salary

The average salary of an NBA referee is from $150,000 to $550,000. The average salaries have spiked considerably since 1983, when NBA officials made between$18,146 and $78,259 each season. Entry-level referees: Entry-level referees in the NBA earn $150,000 per year, according to information released by the league.

Structures between the NBA and WNBA are different and have very different ranges. Based on general information in the NASO offices, WNBA referee pay depends on years of service and estimates that it ranges from about $800 a game to $1,800 per game. Based on those numbers, over the course of a 34-game season, a WNBA official could hypothetically make about $61,200. Pay in the NBA is salary-based. Working a full schedule involves 82 games;  estimates the salary at roughly $120,000 to start, and salaries rise to well above $400,000 for the most senior referees

The first woman to lead the U.S. Air Force Academy, Michelle D. Johnson was hired by the NBA last fall to streamline its referee hiring processes.

Has the NBA’s Effort to Hire More  Female Refs Stalled?

The first woman to lead the U.S. Air Force Academy, Michelle D. Johnson was hired by the NBA last fall to streamline its referee hiring processes. According to numbers provided by the NBA, 16 of the 65 referees (28 percent) in the NBA G League are women, and at the conclusion of the 2017 WNBA season, 12 of the 32 referees (37 percent) were women.

Recently installed to supervise the process is Michelle D. Johnson, the league’s new Senior Vice President and Head of Referee Operations, who was brought in last October to oversee officials in all three leagues, as well as focus on refining the scouting, development and evaluation processes.

Considering all the feel good feeling surrounding the hirings of  Palmer and Kantner back in 1997 .Currently just three women officiate in the NBA today—Ashley Moyer-Gleich ,Natalie Sago and Lauren Holtkamp. Now in her fourth season, Holtkamp started on her path to the NBA after playing Division II college ball at Drury University.

Collective Bargaining Definition-WNBA Players Union Opts Out Of Its CBA

WNBA Players Union Opt Out of Collective Bargaining Agreement

Image result for WNBA Players Union

Gender Equality

It is a daring move for a union in a league that is often dismissed by sports journalists who don’t actually watch and haven’t seen the way a new generation of stars have reshaped women’s basketball game . WNBA players are putting the question of respect for their work and talent  on front street . Currently alot of players have to play every off season thousands of miles from home in Russia , Eastern Europe  or some far flung place in order to just  pay the bills and take of their families. Unlike male counterparts WNBA players have no  down time to stay home, work on their craft, build interest in the league and develop organically with their teammates.

Almost 50 years after Title IX.  Title IX states that: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

The  league includes predominately  black women and other  many women of all races, which means racism, sexism  are all in play. That on top of the fact that women playing sports trying to achieve greatness on terms that haven’t been dictated by men, and are in no way related to how they look is itself still subversive.

WNBA Players Union says they do not  want the brightest  and  best  young girls growing up thinking that men are the only  reference points for attaining great achievements in life  . We want those girls dreaming about growing up into the best women they can be. And let them  dream about the WNBA  league that I know ours can become. A league that has a fair and consistent work environment. A league that treats its players as the world-class athletes they are. A league that invests in its future. A league that believes in us as much as we believe in it.

The union’s decision to opt out means a new CBA will need to be agreed upon before the 2020 season.

.

WNBA P.A. :We Are Betting on Ourselves

WNBPA president and Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike said that opting out “means not just believing in ourselves, but going one step further: betting on ourselves. It means being a group of empowered women, in the year 2018, not just feeling fed up with the status quo, but going one step further: rejecting the status quo. And it means taking a stand, not just for the greatest women’s basketball players of today, but going one step further: taking a stand for the greatest women’s basketball players of tomorrow.”

los-angeles-sparks-wnba-nneka-ogwumike

Ogwumike added that the players are hoping to have a more of a open line of communication regarding financial matters in the league and a better understanding of what they mean for everyone involved.

The WNBA END GAME

“In opting out of this CBA, our primary objective is full transparency Ogwumike added. The WNBA Players Union requires more information about where the league is as  far as business financials are concerned. In order so that we may come together and make intelligent business decisions for  future  players and the womens basketball game as a whole.

“You probably don’t know this, but as players, we never get to see the numbers. We don’t know how the league is doing. As the kids say nowadays, we just want to see the receipts.

“This is not an adversarial thing. Believe me, this is incredibly difficult on a human level. We have to sit across the negotiating table from the same people that we work with day-in, day-out, and who we know want this game to be great, too. We just want full transparency so we can figure out how to make common-sense changes that will help our players’ quality of life.”

WNBA Finals Game 2

NBA Brass Party Line Operation Numbers Are Not Verified

The NBA runs  and subsidizes the WNBA .NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “On average WNBA ownership has lost over $10 million every year we’ve operated,” meaning that wage raises are not on the table. Yet this is a number that has not been verified. Part of this process is the players’ truly becoming partners in growing the league, daring Silver to open up the books for the first time to allow the union to actually see exactly how much revenue is generated and what the fair share for the players could be.

“The league has sustained huge losses over the inception from the inception 22 years ago, including a $12 million loss just last season, but those are investments that the NBA is making, and what I would say is that the Players’ Association has all of those financials. They have access to that. We’ve shared it with them, and what we are looking forward to doing is having a fully open, transparent and engaging discussion around the business realities that exist in the league. But the Players’ Association has all those financials. We’ve made everything available to them and will continue to operate in a very transparent manner. …We’ve shared all of that information with the Players’ Association and look forward to having that conversation with the executive committee and with the players directly around the realities of the business.

It’s Not All About The Money

Current WNBA Players President Ogwumike said  that opting out is “not purely about salaries” and “not all about the money.”

The 2016 WNBA MVP emphasized: “We just want what we’re worth. We just want what’s right. We just want to leave this game a little better than we found it for the next generation.”

Financially speaking  it is worth noting  that the WNBA is expected to make “less than 1 percent” of the $9 billion in revenue the NBA is expected to generate this year.

The WNBA players aren’t asking for mega  salaries, but they do want a higher share of the revenue since they get 22 percent, while NBA players get about 50 percent. Also  WNBA players would  want more  increased media coverage and sponsorship .

The 2018 WNBA season concluded in September, and the final season under the current CBA is scheduled to begin in May 2019.

Teaming with Planned Parenthood, a frequent target of President  Donald Trump’s administration and the Republican-controlled Congress, is certainly not  a cautious choice.

And as Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, pointed out ,that  the Storm and the league speaking up for the organization reflected not only a historic moment, but also personal histories.

“It’s exciting to make sports history with the Storm,” Richards wrote. “This is the first time ever a professional sports team has partnered with Planned Parenthood.”The Seattle Storm Team Is Also The Best At Hiring Women And Minorities .

Athlete Activism

While athlete activism has received increased attention over the past two years, protests by WNBA players have been going on for much longer and gotten far less consideration.During  the 2016 season, the Mercury   Liberty, and Fever, were fined under the WNBA’s uniform policy after wearing Black Lives Matter shirts. That did not  stop players from  expressing themselves. The  players protested the fines by only talking about the killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling and other instances of police violence  in their post game news conferences. The Minnesota Lynx wore similar shirts, which caused four off duty cops at the game to leave their detail . All players  who  received fines were eventually dropped. The 2016 season also saw the entire Fever team during the National anthem , joined by two players from the Mercury.

The 2017 WNBA season witnessed the Mystics and Sparks  coming together in arms to show unity during the national anthem on a nationally televised game in response to the racially-fueled violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.time.The New York  Liberty organized  a town hall about race featuring members of law enforcement ,athletes and racial justice advocates.

Starting From Ground Zero And You Can Hire That Way

With the NBA only men’s league comparable to the WNBA  , which most recently received an B for gender hiring and  A-plus for racial hiring .The WNBA is a kind of model of how to do it for all leagues, but in particular now that they have literally, virtually a perfect gender score. They have shown the way that you can find talented people who can run sports organizations effectively if you work hard enough and make yourself committed to that.

Part of the reason is they started later than the other (leagues), so from the start, they were able to make that commitment,” said Richard Lapchick, the institute’s director and the lead report author, of the league that began play in 1997.

If you’re starting from ground zero and you can hire that way from the beginning, then you’ve got a better head start,” he added. “The WNBA has continued to press that as a priority, and I think the effects have been remarkable but also consistent.”

The WNBA set the previous record with a score of 96.5 points in 2014. The league had 93.7 points last year and 95.5 points in 2016.

The WNBA IS A MODAL FOR OTHER SPORTS LEAGUES

The study calls the WNBA “the most diverse league in professional sports,” with 52 percent of all team professional positions held by women and 27.7 percent of those positions held by people of color. According to the study, 36 women and 12 people of color are vice presidents or above in team front offices. The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports (TIDES) released a report card on WNBA hiring practices , giving the league a near-perfect score and keeping them ahead of the United States’ other major sports leagues.

The report also found that 14 women and 11 people of color were in team ownership positions this year, an increase of three among women and two among people of color from 2017.

There also were six women who were team CEOs or presidents, one more than there were in 2017 and matching the high that was established in 2010. And there were four people of color in CEO or team president roles, an increase of three from last year and equaling the high set in 2015. There were a few notable declines, though. The league had only three head coaches of color, matching its lowest number since 2006.

The percentage of women in the WNBA league office fell for the third consecutive year, from 54 percent in 2017 to 50 percent. And the percentage of people of color as assistant coaches dropped from its record of 53.8 percent a year ago to 50 percent. Among women assistant coaches, the percentage dropped from 61.5 percent last year to 59.4 percent in 2018. While the overall scores are high for the WNBA.  The league recognizes that there’s still room for improvement.  One could  can argue that since it’s a women’s league, that there should be a higher standard for hiring practices for women in the league, and I would probably argue that way particularly as it can be a model (league),Seeing a league that’s so committed to these values is critically important. And this is the reason the WNBA is heading in the right direction in  assisting the advancement of  women.

Canadian Basketball Team-Rise Of Canadian Players In The NCAA

Tamara Tatham Joins Raptors 905 As First Canadian Woman on G-League Coaching Staff

Image result for Tamara Tatham

Tatham, who hails  from Brampton, Ont., will  be mentored by the Raptors 905 head coach as the Raptors aim to develop and nurture more Canadian coaching talent. Unaware she was the first Canadian woman to join the G League’s coaching ranks.  Tatham said I’m not going to say I’m not nervous, but I’m going to say it’s a blessing, because it’s not something that comes around every day. Tatham professional career was successful  overseas following attending the University of Massachusetts for  four years .

Helping Canada  to win gold on home soil at the 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship in Edmonton and 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto . Was also part of the Canadian runner up team  in Mexico City 2013 Americas tournament . Retired from Canada’s national team in 2017 and was an assistant coach for the University of Toronto women’s team.

Tamara Tatham Believes In A Bright Future For Canadian Women’s Basketball

Tatham has seen how women’s basketball in Canada has changed throughout her career. Now that she’s retired and a coach, she talks about the realistic changes she’d like to see happen for the next generation of Canadian women’s players.

Key to supporting Canadian talent

While women’s basketball across all nations will always face comparisons with men’s leagues, and the ensuing fight for their own piece of the pie,Tatham still insists getting Canada’s national team in front of more eye balls is the key to a strong foundation. She doesn’t see a Canadian domestic pro-league in the cards anytime soon, but thinks a WNBA expansion team in the country could be successful, if Canadians already know what women’s basketball has to offer.

kia-nurse-surveys-action-with-new-york-liberty

“It would be pretty awesome,” said Tatham of Canada’s senior women’s team getting on TV more regularly than just a world championships here, an Olympics there. “That would be awesome to see, if we’re at a big tournament, so that the country can kind of get that feeling that we have when we’re playing for the team,”

“I think that’s a huge challenge and I’m hoping in the future that’s going to start to change.”

And Canada’s national women’s team has earned the air time: since 2015, the team has has made multiple podium appearances, including defeating a dominant Team USA for gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games, and following up with another gold at the 2015 FIBA Americas women’s championship. The team appeared in both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, and currently are ranked 5th in the world. With all their success, Tatham knows Canada has incredible role models in the women’s game, and in addition to how much the women’s game is developing, she knows there’s plenty of possibility.

Canadian women’s basketball is “Dynamic,”Tatham said, excited about the style of play in 2018. It’s nice to see the smart speed of play, and the athleticism. That it  is really cool to watch women’s basketball now. Women are dunking now! That was unheard of when I was growing up,””So I think that’s something that’s going to attract more viewers. I think it takes time. Everything in life takes time.

Expect the  number of Canadians in the NCAA to continue to rise

The change of mentality surrounding Canadian basketball players is the reason why the numbers continue to rise says Tristan Thompson , a NBA Champion with Cleveland Cavaliers

There are 133 players plying in the NCAA in the 2018  season – also a record – the number of Canadians in the league is
expected to take a significant leap over the next two years.Canada started the season with 13 two way players on a NBA roster.

Rory Joseph and Tristan Thompson are  recognized as one of the pioneers of the new Golden Era of Canadian basketball, told NBA.com how encouraging he believes Canada’s new reality is.

“It’s phenomenal. I think when me and Cory were in the ninth grade, we probably had maybe two or three
Division 1 players and they were all going to like small schools,” Thompson explained.

“I remember coaches would tell us it would be an honor for us to go to junior college or it would be an honor for us to go to a school like the University of New Hampshire .No disrespect  but we never wanted to accept that. I think for myself especially it just gave me  motivation to surpass everyone else’s expectations and go to a school like the University of Texas … a high major school.”

After his one and only season at Texas, where he averaged 13.1 points, 7.8rebounds per game, Thompson was taken fourth overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. At the time it was the highest any Canadian had been selected in the draft until the record was broken by Anthony Bennett (2013) and tied by Andrew Wiggins (2014), both of whom went first overall in back to back year

Strong  Projected Canadian NBA 2019 Draft

Many Canadian basketball fans are expecting a record number of draft picks in the off season as most scouts are projecting that anywhere between five to 10 Canadians could get selected in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Four Canadians including Dwight Powell ,Wiggins, Nik Stauskas and  Tyler Ennis were selected in the 2014 draft, a Canadian  record in at two-round draft. Thompson believes that comes down to the change in perception of the young Canadian player.

The best prospects in the class could likely go head-to-head with just about any other year. Leading the way is Duke freshman RJ Barrett.

Barrett, the consensus top prep prospect in the 2018 high school class, is one of the most successful youth players in recent memory. In2017, he was named MVP of Basketball Without Borders and led Canada to its first gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Cup, a run that included an impressive 38 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in a semifinal win over the United States. As a senior, he was named National Player of the Year and led Montverde Academy to a national championship. Then he scooped up the MVP award at the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit to close out his high school career. Barrett’s been really good for a while.

After me and Cory went to a major school a lot of players got on that trail  right  now we have so many male and female  who are playing in high major division one, Thompson declares.

“It’s just crazy how everything is changing so quickly – coaches mentalities back in the day, as I said, was ‘just stick to low major D1s.’ To be honest when they told me, I said, ‘You’re full of s- because I’m way better than those guys that are low major so I’m definitely going high major.’ It’s fun to see, it’s record-breaking, I think the numbers are going to keep mounting every year for a while.

“Right now you look at our national team, I think we can potentially have 12 NBA players on the team which has never been seen except for Team USA.” With the numbers continuing to rise at the youth level and the success many are seeing at the high school and collegiate levels, Canada is positioning itself as one of the power houses in the global basketball landscape -and the Golden Era doesn’t seem to be coming to an end anytime soon.

WNBA Players Offseason-Best Side Jobs

After Playing Basketball, Then What?

The WNBA players don’t have the benefit NBA players enjoy getting paid in the millions . Meaning that most WNBA players will have to look for something else to keep them busy the rest of the year. Most of the players choose to go and play overseas.

For a good deal of  WNBA players, the end of league play means a quick break before heading overseas to play even more basketball until the WNBA season starts going  again in the spring season. But some players either squeeze in other activities prior to heading out to their other teams or decline international play altogether.

Some Players Can Earn Alot More Overseas Than In The WNBA

NBA players get to enjoy off their season break .WNBA players do not have the kind of that luxury however .These two leagues also have completely different pay models.

According to a Forbes magazine salary breakdown ,NBA players enjoy about 50% of league revenue while it’s estimated that
WNBA players receive less than 25% of the revenue. The average salary in the WNBA starts at around $50,000 and caps at $110,000. By comparison, the average starting salary for NBA players is about $550,000. Last year’s WNBA Most Valuable Player, Sylvia Fowles, only made $109,000 for the season  and that’s on the higher end scale of pay. To put it in perspective, WNBA superstars like Sylvia Fowles and Diana Taurasi earn only 20% of an NBA superstar’s salary. Overseas, Taurasi makes 15 times as much. And WNBA players in general make at least three times more from their foreign teams than their average WNBA salary.

WNBA Players Offseason Jobs

Some players decide to take a whole different other job in the off season.

Chiney Ogwumike gets to take a break from having two full-time jobs and concentrate on her ESPN duties where, she’s an NBA analyst.

Skylar Diggins-Smith is a “Her Time to Play” ambassador:

Dallas Wings guard Skylar Diggins-Smith is a Her Time To Play ambassador . Her Time To Play is an important step towards ensuring
that young women have access to mentors and others invested in helping them achieve success. Representation matters Diggins-Smith said.

Renee Montgomery participated in Jr. NBA Week, coaching girls at the Her Time To Play camp in Atlanta. She also recently shared her off season workout routine  with ESPN.

Marissa Coleman  of  the New york Liberty  has a Mellow Mushroom pizza franchise that she co-owns  together  with the LA Sparks’ Alana Beard. Coleman also took part in Harvard Business School’s Crossover Into Business Program in the spring, which several WNBA completed this past  fall  season .

Lindsay Whalen

At the beginning of her career,Lindsay Whalen usually  went overseas in the off season, and played in the Czech Republic,Russia, and Turkey . But now, 15 years into her WNBA career with the Minnesota Lynx, she decided to become the head coach for Alma  Mater ,the University of Minnesota. While still  playing  for the Lynx. Whalen played for the Golden Gophers during her college years, she still holds several records for the school and her jersey number has been retired.

Briann January

In  2017, Briann January became the assistant coach for Arizona State’s women’s
basketball team, a job she would fulfill during  the WNBA basketball  off season. January a former player at ASU who  still holds the record for assists and free throw percentages. This isn’t her first coaching job, as she was a volunteer assistant coach for the Adelphi University women’s basketball program, a Division II school, in the 2013-2014 season. This will also be the first year that January will not play for the Indiana Fever, the team that drafted her in 2009, but for the Phoenix Suns, as she was traded during  the off season.

Career Crossover

When Tamika Catchings purchased  Tea’s Me Cafe, WNBA fans have flocked to the north side of Indianapolis to catch a glimpse of its famous owner.

Though she never expected to go into the restaurant business, Catchings  started planning for a post-WNBA career long before she retired in 2016.Some players find that second act in coaching or broadcasting. Others, though, choose paths that carry them far from the gym into life after a basketball  career  is finished

Tamika Catchings, a former star of the Indiana Fever, poses for a portrait inside Tea’s Me Cafe in Indianapolis in 2017.

The WNBA, NBA and G League now offer a variety of post-basketball training opportunities through their “Career Crossover” initiative. Some of the leagues’ corporate partners invite players to do job shadowing.

There is an apprentice program in which former players work at the NBA’s  New York headquarters for a year, with some earning full-time jobs there.

The WNBA Will Always Be In Theire Hearts

The WNBA will always be part of them, Catchings said. But she hopes every player understands that life can be even better after basketball.

“There are thousands of former pro players who have no idea where they are and what they’re doing,” Catchings said. “Some might be saving the world, for all we know. It’s just so cool to hear all the stories about what people plan to do next.”

Lessons Learned In The WNBA Will Help Players Deal With Launching New Business Concepts.

We’ve really increased our focus on how to support athletes as they transition, said Bethany Donaphin, a former WNBA player who is now head of league operations. Whether you’ve prepared for a long time or not at all, when you stop playing, it is a shock.  The WNBA has  put resources in place to allow players to do that more easily.

Running her foundation  Catch The Stars, which serves underprivileged youth taught Catchings some basic business acumen. She has also found the interpersonal skills she honed in the WNBA have translated to the tea shop.

Catchings is a better boss because she knows how to communicate, resolve conflicts and lead a team. The patience learned in the league will help players to better cope  with negative and positive situations .WNBA has  instilled fearlessness and perseverance to come in handy when  launching new business venture concepts.

Top Female Basketball Coaches-The NBA Assistant Coaching Program

NBA Trending Right Way Hiring Female  Coaches

The  Charlotte Hornets NBA G League Affiliate team the Greensboro Swarm recently announced the team has named Dave Kenah  ,Dan Tacheny, Evan Harville and Chasity Melvin becomes the first female coach in Hornets and Swarm history.  All the assistant coaches  have been added on the staff of recently named Head Coach Joe Wolf

The North Carolina native was a standout at North Carolina State University (1994-98) and was the No. 11 selection in the 1999 WNBA Draft. A WNBA All-Star in 2001, she played for the Cleveland Rockers, Washington Mystics and Chicago Sky over the course of 12 seasons (1999-2010). Melvin’s hire comes through the NBA Assistant Coaches Program, which prepares current and former NBA, WNBA and G League players for coaching careers.

During a game at the UIC Pavillion  on August 15, 2007, Melvin’s left eye was dislodged from its socket after Shameka Christon  of the New York liberty  accidentally struck Melvin’s face as the two were battling for a rebound. Melvin was treated at the near by Medical Center, where her eye went back into its socket by itself. She was able to return to the arena to participate in Fan Appreciation Night activities after the game. Melvin suffered scratches to her cornea, but no skull fractures or vision loss.

The Assistant Coaches Program (ACP), formed by the NBA’s Player  Development department, helps former NBA, WNBA and NBA G League players transition from player to a coaching/front office role. The ACP has  placed notable former players such as Jerry Stackhouse, James Posey and  Vin Baker within different franchises. NBA organizations who opt into the program have the chance to interview this former player pool for open NBA and NBA G League assistant coaching opportunities. Once Greensboro Swarm head coach Joe Wolf  spoke  with  Melvin, he knew she was the right person for the job as one of his assistants.

“I’ve been trying to coach since I retired in 2014,” Melvin said. “I coached high school for two years and was applying to college and WNBA jobs to try and get my foot back in the door with the WNBA. I didn’t see the offer as history originally. I just said, ‘Mom, I finally got a coaching job!” While the initial rush of adrenaline about completing a lifelong dream generated an immense amount of excitement, Melvin quickly realized how important the path she’d be paving for young women after her would be.

First Female Coach In Hornets And Swarm History.

Melvin wants to help other young women and  she wants to inspire them that the journey will be different and challenging, but that they can accomplish any of the goals and dreams that they want to. It’s also great to inspire young women,  especially young African American women, who want to get into sports.

To be a part of history is always great and it’s always great for me and my family and my friends back home because I’m from such a small town, Melvin said. I grew up in a one stoplight town in one of the poorest counties in North Carolina. So this is for the poor people , rural counties in North Carolina.

Other female assistants in the NBA include Becky Hammon with the Spurs and Dallas’ Jenny Boucek. Melvin’s  hire comes after Kristy Toliver became the first active WNBA player to become an NBA assistant when she joined the Washington  Wizards.

After first found out that she’d been granted the opportunity as a Swarm assistant coach, Melvin could hardly hide her emotions.
